Words of Jaume Lleixà about Mare Mundi – Tribut al mar
My Friend, the Sea
As you all know, the sea covers more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and contains approximately 97% of the planet’s water. The oceans regulate the climate, generate much of the oxygen we breathe and host a biodiversity that is still largely undiscovered: it is estimated that more than 80% of marine species remain unknown. Since time immemorial, the sea has been an essential element for life and the development of civilizations, a route for trade, exploration and encounters between peoples, while also serving as a stage for myths and legends that have shaped our collective imagination and cultural essence.
For those fortunate of us being born and living by the sea, its constant presence has always been a point of reference that helps us to find our bearings: its omnipresent horizon has served as a compass, the regular sound of the waves has always had a calming, almost therapeutic effect, accompanying our daily lives and helping us regain perspective when everything seems to be accelerated. Even for those who are not especially fond of summer, the beach, the sand and the crowds, the sea is often a place of refuge, an open space where one can pause, breathe and reconnect with what is essential, a reminder and an acceptance of our own smallness in the face of its immensity.
With Mare Mundi, the SCCC invites you to a musical journey through this immensity. Each piece is a sonic window reflecting the sea from different perspectives: its great diversity, its fragility —so evident today with climate change—, its beauty and its intimate relationship with humanity. This journey invites you to rediscover the sea not only as a physical space, but as a living heritage that deserves to be listened to and preserved. An essential tribute to a sea that has given us everything.
